The climate of Grand Canyon: when to go to Grand Canyon

This post is also available in: 简体中文 繁體中文 Deutsch

The climate of the plateau above the Grand Canyon is desert and semi-rigid climate, with significant temperature ranges that are quite well marked between the day and night. The temperatures of the North Rim (the northern part of the canyon) are generally lower than the South Rim because the altitude difference is about 300 meters.

The annual average minimum temperatures of the Grand Canyon region remain below freezing in the months from November to March in the South Rim, and from October to April in the North Rim. On both sides of the canyon, in the winter, heavy snowfalls are common, this sometimes makes it difficult to visit the canyon in the winter months. The North Rim infact remains closed from mid-October to mid-May, while the South Rim is open year-round. The snow remains on the ground during most of the winter months.

Inside the canyon summer temperatures can be very high, while winter temperatures are generally mild. If you want to explore the interior of the canyon on foot, you have to consider that between June and September the average maximum temperatures exceed 35 ° C with peaks of 41 ° C in August.
