New Zealand climate: when to go to New Zealand

The climate of New Zealand is a maritime climate and it varies between sub-tropical climate in the far north to cool temperate climate of the south of the country. The climate is influenced by sea and the mountains and can undergo sudden changes in the day.

The mountains divide the country in very different climatic zones between them, particularly on the South island, the west coast is the most rainy of the country, while just 100 km away, the area east of the mountains is the most dry in the country. Winter (June-August) is cold and rainy in particular on the North, while in the mountains snow appear. Some areas of South island receive little rain in winter, this makes a pleasant time to visit despite the low temperatures, while along the west coast there are heavy rainfall.

Spring (September to November) has a very changeable climate with sudden changes, it can vary between hot and cold throughout the day. The warmer months are the summer between December and February, with average temperatures ranging between 20°C and 30°C, while the coldest months are between June and August, with average temperatures ranging between 10°C and 15°C.

The sea water temperature varies greatly between the North Island and the South Island. In the North Island sea temperatures exceed 20 ° C during the summer months, that is between January and March. While in the South Island sea temperatures reach 18 ° C in February. In winter the temperature of the sea water drop to 12 ° C in the South Island and 15 ° C in the North Island.
