The month of August is great for visiting the countries of Africa south of the equator including Southern Africa: Angola, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Tanzania, Mozambique, the Republic of South Africa. In this part of Africa the climate in August is generally dry, only on the South African coast the climate becomes a bit rainy. In August you have in South Africa the chance to admire spectacular phenomena like those of the flowery desert in Namaqualand and the whales in the Bay of Hermanus.
In Europe the coasts of the countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea like Spain, France, Italy, Croatia, Greece and Turkey are excellent for those who want to take a beach holiday, but remember that in this month you will find high prices and overcrowding. Less advisable is this period for those, who want to visit the Italian art cities and the inland areas of Spain, Greece and Turkey.
The climate is warm throughout the European continent. Popular destinations in August are the Nordic countries from Iceland to Norway, from Russia to Sweden. Portugal, Ireland, Great Britain and France are also very popular destinations during this time of the year. The period between the end of August and the beginning of September is the best time to admire the flowering heather (Erica) in Scotland.
In the Indian Ocean the Seychelles, Zanzibar, Mauritius and Madagascar have an excellent climate in the month of August. August is a good month to visit countries like Tanzania, Kenya and Mozambique.
In North America the wild areas of the Far West are among the most popular in August. Be aware that in some areas like the Death Valley and the deserts of Arizona and Utah the heat is really oppressive. If the excessive heat does not please you, why not choose Canada or Alaska? In these wild and spectacular lands the climate is excellent on the relatively mild and long summer days.
August is also one of the best months to visit the Pantanal, the Amazon and much of Brazil. In Rio de Janeiro the months between June and September are the driest months of the year and have mild temperatures. In this month the rains are less intense and less frequent. August is a good month for a trip to the Andean highlands of Chile, Bolivia and Peru. The temperatures are low in winter, but the days are dry and clear.
On the islands of Indonesia August is the driest month. Thus you will have the highest probability of enjoying sunny days and mild temperatures. The plateaus of Tibet and Mongolia have at this time of the year less rigid temperatures.
August is also a good time for the islands of the South Pacific: French Polynesia, Samoa, Cook Islands, Tonga, Fiji, New Caledonia and more. August is a good time for tropical Australia like Queensland, the Northern Territory, Western Australia and for the centre of the Australian continent.
Those who love winter sports can visit the New Zealand Alps or the Chilean ski resorts.
