The climate of Medellín: when to go to Medellín

The city of Medellín is located in the Aburrá Valley (Valle de Aburrá) in the mountains of the Central Cordillera (Cordillera Central) of the Colombian Andes. The city is located on a plateau at 1,500 meters above sea level but some neighborhoods are also located at 1,800 meters above sea level. The climate that characterizes Medellín is the humid sub-tropical climate of the plateau, which is characterized by frequent rainfall and constant and temperate temperatures mitigated because the altitude. Medellín has an average annual temperature of 22.2 ° C. The rains are frequent all year round. The month with most rainfall is October with a monthly average of 221 mm, followed by May with 199 mm. Monthly rainfall values remain above 100 mm between March and November.

By contrast, only in the three months of December, January and February the rains drop below 100 mm. The driest month is January, with 61 mm of monthly rainfall. The average annual amount of rainfall that the city of Medellín receives is 1,673 mm. The rainy days are 227 per year. The rainiest month, October, has an average of 25 rainy days. Only the months from December to March and those of June and July have less than 18 rainy days. The month with the least rainy days is January with 12 rainy days. The average annual humidity is 68%, monthly it varies between 63% in July and 73% in November.

WHEN TO GO TO MEDELLÍN

Medellín has a pleasant climate with mild temperatures, so his visit can be done any time of year. The best time for a trip to Medellin, is however, the relatively dry season between December and February. The month of July can be also good.
