Itinerary in Arizona and Utah: the best of American parks

The itinerary described here is a circular itinerary that starts and arrives in Las Vegas (Nevada), it allows the visit in a minimum of 11 nights of some of the most beautiful national parks of Arizona and Utah. The total route excluding detours is approximately 1,400 miles (2,250 km). The diary of this itinerary, but done with only 9 nights, can be found here: Travel Diary in Arizona and Utah.

Car hire is advisable to do it in time before leaving for the United States, find yourself a comfortable and air-conditioned car!

1st day: Las Vegas

Visit the city of Las Vegas.

Day 2: Las Vegas-Grand Canyon Village, 277 miles (445 km) – approximately 4 hours 30 minutes

On the way visit the Hoover Dam.

THE GRAND CANYON

Day 3: Grand Canyon National Park

A full day is dedicated to visiting the Grand Canyon National Park, driving along the East Rim Drive (25 miles), and stopping at all the many scenic spots along the way. Some easy walks along the edge of the canyon are also recommended.

Day 4: Grand Canyon Village-Holbrook, 240 miles (386 km) – approximately 4 hours (excluding time for the visit to the Petrified Forest National Park).

On the way stop at Meteor Crater N. M. and then after Holbrook visit the Petrified Forest National Park.

THE CANYON DE CHELLY AND THE MONUMENT VALLEY

5th day: Holbrook-Kayenta, 185 miles (297 km) – about 4 hours (excluding time for the visit to Canyon de Chelly and Monument Valley).

On the way visit the Canyon de Chelly. Visit of Monument Valley, where it is recommended to stay to watch the sunset (20 miles from Kayenta).

  • With an extra night in Kayenta you can visit Antelope Canyon and Lake Powell. Or sleep one night in Cortez and visit Mesa Verde National Park.

Day 6: Kayenta-Moab, 190 miles (305 km) – about 3 hours 40 minutes (excluding time for visiting the parks and stops).

Along the way visit the Mexican Hat, the Goosenecks of San Juan River, the Natural Bridges N.M., and if there is time for Newspaper Rock and Canyonlands N.P. (The Needles).

THE ARCHES NATIONAL PARK

7th day: Moab

Today is a day dedicated to visiting the Arches National Park.

THE CANYONLANDS

8th day: Moab

Today dedicated to visiting Dead Horse Point and Canyonlands N.P. (Island in the Sky).

Day 9: Moab-Bryce Canyon, 270 miles (434 km) – about 6 hours (excluding the time for visiting the Capitol Reef N.P.).

Along the way visit the Capitol Reef N.P.

THE BRYCE CANYON

Day 10: Bryce Canyon

Today is a day dedicated to visiting Bryce Canyon N.P., an excursion inside the Canyon along the Navajo Loop Trail is recommended.

THE ZION NATIONAL PARK

Day 11: Bryce Canyon-Las Vegas, 250 miles (402 km) – about 4 hours 40 minutes (excluding the time for visiting the Zion N.P.).

On the way visit the Red Canyon and Zion National Park.
