The climate of the state of Rio de Janeiro: when to go

The climate of the state of Rio de Janeiro is hot and humid along the coast, while it is temperate and humid in the interior at higher altitudes. The flat areas of the state have a semi-humid tropical climate, with heavy rains in the summer months (December-March) and a dry winter.

In the internal areas of the state of Rio de Janeiro and in the highest areas there is a tropical climate of high altitude, with rainy summers and dry winters, temperatures drop slightly with increasing height, the average annual rainfall is about 1,500-2,400 mm.

In the area of the city of Rio de Janeiro the climate is of a tropical maritime type with rains during the summer months, between December and April, on average the city has over 1,100 mm of rain per year.

Along the northern coast of the state, rainfall tends to decrease, in the Cabo Frio area there are less than 800 mm of rain per year relatively well distributed, but with maximums between October and January.

The southern coast of the state is much more rainy, in this area it exceeds 2,000 mm of rainfall a year, the rainiest months are between October and April.

Temperatures vary with varying heights, and touch very low values in the area of the Itatiaia National Park (Parque Nacional de Itatiaia), where the Pico das Agulhas Negras (2,791 meters) is located, the highest mountain in the state of Rio de Janeiro, where it can rarely snow in winter. In this area the rains are concentrated between November and March, while between March and August they are very rare, the average annual rainfall in the town of Itatiaia is around 1,500 mm.

WHEN TO GO IN THE STATE OF RIO DE JANEIRO

The best time to travel to the state of Rio de Janeiro are the coolest and least rainy months from May to October / November.
