Niagara Falls: America’s natural wonder

This post is also available in: Deutsch

Niagara Falls, one of the natural wonders of North America. These waterfalls are located in the northwestern part of the state of New York, about 30 km northwest of the city of Buffalo, and are divided between Canada and the United States. The waterfalls were discovered in the 17th century by French explorers and hunters who explored the Great Lakes area in search of fur.

The falls are formed by the Niagara River, which joins the Eire and Ontario lakes and which marks the border between the United States and Canada. The Niagara River with its waterfalls overcomes about half the difference in height – which is 100 meters – that exists between the two lakes. In fact, the falls make a jump of about 50 meters, discharging the flow of excess water from Lake Superior, Michigan, Huron and Erie into Lake Ontario.

THE CANADIAN PART IS THE MOST SPECTACULAR

The falls are divided into two sections by Goat Island. The smallest section, 350 meters long and 51 meters high, is located in United States territory and is called American Falls. The Canadian part of the falls, called Horseshoes Falls, is 800 meters long and 49 meters high. The Canadian part is undoubtedly the largest and most spectacular section of the falls.

To admire the waterfalls there are several paths that lead to the most beautiful viewpoints. The paths leading to Goat Island allow you to see the sides of both waterfalls. In the United States section there is also an observatory where you can admire spectacular views of the falls. There are also scenic trains that allow you to visit the falls. If you want, it is also possible to take short cruises that lead to the falls below.

Niagara Falls have a flow of 11,000 cubic meters of water per second and develop a great deal of energy. The water flow of the falls is partly used for hydroelectric purposes via a large hydroelectric power plant that produces energy. The falls are visited annually by over 20 million people, they represent one of the most visited natural attractions in North America.
