The climatic zone of southern Chile and Chilean Patagonia includes the southern Chilean regions of Aysen and Magallanes, located between 45 ° and 56 ° south latitude. In the Aysen region of Chilean Patagonia, there are two types of climate, one related to the sea, which affects coastal areas and islands, and the other, colder continental, which affects the Andes region.
In the northern part of southern Chile the rains are abundant throughout the year, for example, Puerto Aisen has an average annual rainfall of about 3,000 mm well distributed in each month of the year, in fact, the average of the summer months is about 200 mm per month, while in the winter months it is about 300 mm per month.
The average summer temperature is around 14 ° C while in winter there are average values of around 4 ° C. In the eastern areas, the climate becomes more extreme, with reference to the temperature, and produces a marked decrease in precipitation. This continentality is also manifested by severe winters with frequent snow and frost. The wind is a constant in the Patagonian climate throughout the year. The relatively less windy periods are those between October and mid November and between mid March and April.
The extreme south of Chile is more arid and cold. In the Punta Arenas region, summer temperatures (December-February) reach maximum values of 14 ° C and minimum values of 5 ° C, while in winter (June-August) the average of maximum temperatures stops at 3 ° C and the average of minimum temperatures at -1 ° C. Precipitation is scarce, but distributed every month of the year with an annual average of 400 mm, the winds blowing from the Pacific Ocean are particularly cold.
