Durban is an important port city located along the coast of the Indian Ocean in the province of KwaZulu-Natal. This city of South Africa is with about three and a half million inhabitants, the third most populous city in the Republic of South Africa and today has a large community of Asian origin. The majority of the population is black (51.1%). But then there are large minorities of Asian (24%) and European (15.3%) origin. Finally, the colored ones are 8.6%. English (49.8%) is the most spoken language followed by Zulu (33.1%).

The city was founded in 1824 under the name of Port Natal. This name was given to her because the Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama disembarked on this coast during his journey to India on Christmas 1497. The city is now one of the most important ports on the African continent, from here the goods from the mining and industrialized areas of central South Africa pass.

A WARM SUB-TROPICAL CLIMATE AND LONG BEACHES

Durban is a popular tourist center due to its warm sub-tropical climate and long beaches. The city is located along the shores of the Indian ocean in a huge natural lagoon that forms its bay. In the interior there are low hills which are the remains of fossilized dunes. The most touristic area of ​​the city is the Waterfront (Golden Mile), a walk along the sea that is over a kilometer long, lined with hotels, restaurants and amusement parks. In its historical center there are numerous examples of Art Deco buildings. The city also has a beautiful aquarium, a dolphinarium and a renowned botanical garden. The Drakensberg mountains rise just over a hundred kilometers north of the city and mark the border with Lesotho.

The city is served by an important international airport: the King Shaka International Airport which is located about 35 km north of the city center. Durban International Airport is connected with major African, European and Asian cities.
