The archipelago covers a total of 7,447 km² and has over 2,000,000 inhabitants, made up of eight main islands. The largest island is that of Tenerife (2,034 km²). Tenerife is the most populous island with almost 900,000 inhabitants.

The islands are of volcanic origin, and largely semi-desert. Their geography presents rocky coasts and important mountains, among which, the highest mountain in Spain, the Teide volcano (3,718 meters), which is located on the island of Tenerife.

The natural beauties make the tourist industry, together with agriculture and fishing, the main economic activity of the archipelago. Renowned for long beaches bathed by the Atlantic ocean, the Canary Islands are full of natural attractions.
