Honduras: a plateau that stretches between two seas

Honduras (República de Honduras) is a presidential republic situated in Central America, which borders to the south with Nicaragua, to the west with Guatemala, to the south-west with El Salvador, to the north and east is washed by the Caribbean Sea, to the south from the Pacific Ocean, the capital is the city of Tegucigalpa.

Several islands in the Caribbean Sea are also part of the state of Honduras, between these are Islas de la Bahía (Roatán, Utila, Guanaja) and Islas Santanillas (Swan Islands), along the coast of the Pacific Ocean, in the Gulf of Fonseca, are the islands of El Tigre, Zacate Grande and Exposición.

The Honduras territory is largely mountainous, formed by a vast plateau, which stretches from one side to the other of the isthmus, crossed by mountain chains of volcanic origin and a depression that extends from the Caribbean Sea to the Pacific Ocean.

The western mountains have the highest peaks, including the Pico Congolón (2,500 meters) and, the highest mountain in the country, Cerro de Las Minas (2,850 metres), also the eastern cordillera presents peaks exceeding 2,000 metres as the Montaña de la Flor (2,300 meters), Mount El Boquerón (2,485 meters) and the Pico Bonito (2,435 metres). Coastal areas of the Caribbean Sea are edged by lagoons and are sometimes marshy.

The economy of Honduras is based on agricolture (bananas, coffee, sugar cane, palm oil, pineapple, citrus fruits, rice, corn and beans), forestry (wood: pine, mahogany, ebony and walnut) and farming (cattle), there are also important mineral deposits, especially zinc and lead, but also gold, silver, antimony, industry is under-developed.

  • Population: 7,483,000 (2007 data) (Mestizos (descendants of European and Amerindians) 90%, Amerindians 7%, Blacks 2%, Whites 1%).
  • State Capital: Tegucigalpa.
  • Language: Official language is Spanish. Along the Caribbean coast English is also spoken.
  • Religion: Roman Catholic 85%; Protestant 10%.
  • Currency: Lempira (HNL)
