Bangladesh (Ghana Prajatantri Bangladesh) is a people’s republic, with the capital Dhaka. The country located in South Asia, is crossed by the Tropic of Cancer, and is bordered to the west, north and east by India, to the southeast with Burma (Myanmar) and faces south on the Gulf of Bengal.
The territory of Bangladesh extends over an immense plain, formed by the floodplains of the Ganges, Brahmaputra-Jamuna, Tista and Surma-Meghna rivers. Near the coast lies the immense Ganges-Brahmaputra delta, characterized by the flooding of rivers and the tide, to the west are the Sunderbans, a large area covered with mangrove forests.
To the north of the country is the Barind region, a wavy lowland located between the Ganges and Brahmaputra. The country’s only hilly areas are the Chittagong hills and a small area of the Shillong plateau. The highest peak in the country, Mount Mowdok Mual (1,052 meters), is located on the border with Burma (Myanmar).
