Barbados: the most English island in the Caribbean

The island of Barbados (431 sq km) is a constitutional monarchy associated with the British Commonwealth. The state is made up of a single island located east of Saint Vincent, in the archipelago of the Windward Islands in the Lesser Antilles. The capital is Bridgetown. The island of Barbados is the easternmost of the Lesser Antilles and is located in the southern part of this archipelago in the Caribbean Sea.

The inhabitants of the island are mostly (90%) of African origin. Therefore, on the island there are also small minorities of European origin (4%), of mixed race, mainly mulattos, that is, crossbreeds between European and African (4%) and of Asian origin, mostly Indians but also Chinese (2%). The official language is English. But the inhabitants also speaks Bajan, a variant of English typical of Barbados. The religion of the vast majority of the population of Barbados is Christian. Especially the Anglican religion professed by about 40% of the population.

A FLAT ISLAND OF CORAL ORIGIN

The coral island of Barbados is largely flat. In its geography there are only low hills, which reach the maximum height with Mount Hillaby (336 meters). The arable land of the island is largely cultivated with sugar cane. Just the sugar cane is at the base of the local agricultural and industrial economy. In addition, sugar and molasses and rum are also produced from sugar cane.

Barbados is among the most economically developed states in the Caribbean region. Some oil and natural gas fields have also recently been discovered. Fishing is of some importance in the island’s economy. While tourism is one of the driving sectors of the economy.
