Croatia climate: when to go to Croatia

Croatia has significant differences in climate due to its geographical location. Along the coast of Dalmatia and Istria, the climate is tempered by the influence of the Adriatic Sea and is mainly Mediterranean, with mild winters and hot, dry summers.

The mountains of the Dinaric Alps act as a barrier to the mild influence of the sea, and in areas east of the mountains, ie in the hilly areas and plains of Slavonia, in the area of the capital Zagreb and along the rivers Sava, Drava and the Danube, the climate is continental with cold and snowy winters, and hot summers.

In the inland areas there are average minimum temperatures below freezing during the winter months between December and February, this area is also characterized by the blowing of strong winds, including during the winter, the famous Bora. In this area the wettest periods are the summer and autumn months.

The temperatures of the places of Croatia depend on their position with respect to the mountains and exposure to winds, temperatures increase proceeding from west to east and from north-west to north-east.

The coldest month is January with an average temperature of -2°C inland to 5°C in the coastal regions.
