The city of Asunción is located in a flat area along the banks of the Paraguay River just 43 meters above sea level. Because of its location away from the sea and in a flat area the climate of the city belongs to that of the transition climate between the climate of the tropical savanna and the humid sub-tropical climate. The climate of Asunción is therefore characterized by brief mild and dry winters and long, hot, humid summers.

THE PRECIPITATIONS

Asunción has an annual average of more than 1,400 mm of rain. Rainfall is concentrated between the months of October and April, which represent the long rainy season. The rainiest month is April, followed by November. The humidity is high throughout the year, the average is 70%, but in the months of May and June it reach 76%.

The rainfall occurs often in the form of short and intense storms, this means that the amount of annual rainy days is not too high, Asunción has in fact an average of 83 rainy days per year. Rainy days are equally divided: almost all months of the year have between 8 and 7 days of rain per month, the only exceptions are the months of July, August and September, which have, respectively,  only 4, 5 and 6 days of rain.

The dry months and with better climate and temperature are the winter months that is, those of June, July and August, during these months, sometimes there is fog. July is the driest month of the year. The hours of sunshine in Asunción are high, the annual average is 2,803.

TEMPERATURES

The city of Asunción is known as one of the hottest capitals of South America: during the hot season – between November and March – the maximum temperatures  at times may reach values ​​higher than 35 ° C and 40 ° C.

The average annual temperature is 23.3 ° C. The average maximum temperatures reach between November and March values ​​higher than 30 ° C, reaching a peak of 33.5 ° C in January. The month in which the average maximum temperatures are lower is June with 23.1 ° C. The average minimum temperature reached the highest value in January with 22.8 ° C and the lowest value in July with 13.1 ° C. The frosts are possible in media for 1 or 2 days a year.

WHEN TO GO TO ASUNCIÓN

The best season to visit Asunción is the dry and mild season which corresponds to the winter in the southern hemisphere, namely the months between May and September. Should be avoided, instead, the very hot and humid months of the rainy season.
