What to see in Upper Austria: the most beautiful attractions

The territory of the region is very diverse. There are plains crossed by the Danube and its tributaries, hilly areas, and mountain areas among the most spectacular in Austria. The landscape is protected by a national park (Nationalpark Kalkalpen), two natural parks (Mühlviertel, Obst-Hügel-Land), protected areas, conservation areas, and natural monuments.

Let’s see what to see in Upper Austria. The Hallstatt-Dachstein and Salzkammergut cultural-landscape area is one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. This area is located in the southern section of the region, and is an area rich in natural beauty. There is a very suggestive landscape made of mountains, lakes, caves (including, near Hallstatt, the famous Dachsteinhöhlen caves) and vast forests.

LINZ: THE THIRD AUSTRIAN CITY

In addition to the magnificent natural landscape of lakes and mountains, other tourist attractions of Upper Austria are the capital, Linz, the third largest city in Austria, with a beautiful old town and important museums, and the many small historic towns such as Hallstatt, Bad Ischl, Enns, Sankt Wolfgang, Gmunden, Schärding, Steyr and Wels. Other things to see in Upper Austria are the ancient abbeys such as those of Sankt Florian, and Kremsmünster. Among the reasons for a visit to this Austrian region are the spas of Bad Ischl, Gallspach, Bad Hall, Bad Schallerbach, and Bad Goisern. In Upper Austria there is also the infamous Nazi concentration camp of Mauthausen. Here you can relive the sad episodes of the Second World War.

Finally, the region of Upper Austria is crossed by some interesting tourist itineraries such as those of the Romantic Road (Romantikstraße), the Iron Road (Eisenstraße), the Road of the Emperors and the Kings (Straße der Kaiser und Könige). The thematic itinerary of the three Mühlviertler roads is also very interesting. There are three different itineraries. One itinerary is dedicated to museums (Mühlviertler Museumsstraße). Another to Gothic art (Mühlviertler Gotikstraße). While the latter focuses on the art of weaving (Mühlviertler Weberstraße).
