Salzburg is a state (Bundesländer) of central Austria located between Germany to the north and Italy to the south. This Austrian region also borders the Austrian states of Tyrol, Carinthia, Styria and Upper Austria. The capital is the city of Salzburg.

Salzburg State is the sixth Austrian state by size and seventh by population, and is divided into 5 districts (Bezirke), and a statutory city (Statutarstädte), the capital of Salzburg. Salzburg is a diverse land dotted with lakes, rivers and mountains. The northern part of the region is formed by the areas of Flachgau and Tennengau, crossed by the Salzach River and the central-eastern offshoots of the North-Eastern Alps (Nördliche Kalkalpen). In this part of the territory of the region there is part of the Salzkammergut area, a territory between Upper Austria, Styria and Salzburg, which for its beauty has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

The southern area of the state is formed by the regions of Pinzgau in the west, Pongau in the center and Lungau in the east. These regions are traversed to the south by the Central Alps chain, with the Lower Tauern (Niederen Tauern) to the east, and, in the center, the majestic Hohen Tauern mountains (Hohen Tauern). These mountains exceed three thousand meters in height in several places. And this is where the highest mountain in Salzburg is located, which is also the fourth highest mountain in Austria, the Großvenediger (3,662 meters). In this area the territory is protected by the Hohe Tauern National Park. There are also 3 nature parks in Salzburg: Buchberg, Riedingtal in Zederhaus, and Weißbach bei Lofer.
