Bregenz, located along the eastern shores of Lake Constance (Bodensee), was originally an ancient settlement of the Celts, later, in the 1st century BC, it was conquered by the Romans who colonized it and founded the city of Brigantium. In the Middle Ages a castle was founded there and in the 15th century, Bregenz became part of the Habsburg domains.
Today the city is the capital of the Austrian state of Vorarlberg. The historic center has some interesting buildings such as the Martinsturm (ancient granary) which now houses the military museum of Vorarlberg (Vorarlberger Militärmuseum), and the remains of part of the medieval city walls. The early medieval castle of Burg Hohenbregenz dominates the town.
