The Turks and Caicos Islands are a British overseas territory located in the Caribbean, in the Lesser Antilles, north of the island of Hispaniola and south-east of the Bahamas. The state is made up of the two archipelagos of the Turks and Caicos islands. The capital is the town of Cockburn Town, on the island of Grand Turk.

The Caicos Islands located at the southern end of the Bahamas archipelago, of which they are geographically part, represent more than 95% of the state’s territory. These islands are made up of seven main islands. These are Middle Caicos (144 sq km), North Caicos (116 sq km), Providenciales (98 sq km), East Caicos (90 sq km), West Caicos (28 sq km), South Caicos (21 sq km), Ambergris Cay) and numerous islets and rocks.

LUXURY TOURISM AND CRUISE SHIPS

On the island of East Caicos lies Flamingo Hill (48 meters), the highest point in the state of Turks and Caicos. The Turks Islands are located south-east of the Caicos, and include the islands of Grand Turk (18 sq km), Salt Cay (6 sq km), and Cotton Cay (1 sq km). As well as other uninhabited islets and numerous rocks. The economy of the islands is based on tourism, financial activities, agriculture (corn, sisal, fruit, vegetables) and fishing. The islands have focused heavily on tourism related to luxury resorts and cruise ships.

The islands were first sighted in 1512 by a Spanish expedition led by the Spanish conquistador Juan Ponce de León. In the 17th century they became pirate bases that attacked the Spanish galleons loaded with gold. It was only at the end of the 17th century that the British from Bermuda founded the first settlements in the archipelago.
